Module 3 Formstorming

Project 3
Assignment 1
This week I explored different forms of self-portraiture. I learned that there are a variety of different images that can represent your personality and various different aspects of yourself other than self portraits in selfies and paintings. I learned that there is also a type of self-portrait within code that can use simple models to represent your personality and preferences. Because of this diversity, everyone's is different. On top of that, there are some other ways to express yourself by drawing on paper.
- For this activity I chose to try my hand at painting my own data and paper self-portrait. I thought it was an interesting experiment. Replacing the traditional self-portrait by a different representative model is a very original and representative one. Painting myself also allows people to feel more immersed in the experience.
- I think there are two kinds of success. One is traditionally successful. For example, getting good grades in exams, making a lot of money, etc. These represent success for most people. And I think there is another kind of success. That is, each person's definition of their own success. For example, for me, I plan myself to memorize five new words every day, and I stick to it then that's my success. Maybe that doesn't represent success for other people, but it does mean something to me.
- I think the program made me learn more about myself. I think I had a harder time choosing to express my own true emotions during this project. I was always thinking about what kind of work would be cool for other people to make, but often forgot what I really wanted for myself. So I will continue to explore the project to overcome this difficulty.
- For the content of this lecture, I didn't just read and watch the videos provided by the professor. I also found more information about self-portrait on the internet. For example, I learned about a data company that gave each of their employees their own data self-portrait. I thought this was very interesting.
Assignment 2
This week I explored the new 3d scanning technology. It allows me to make models of items using only scans. On top of that, I sea modified their vulnerabilities in meshmixer. After I determined what I wanted to make to represent me, I began my modeling and 3d printing.
- For this this project, I chose to use three items that I thought would represent me. Because I thought it was a more abstract choice to compare and contrast. I prefer things that are vague and meaningful. For the three items I chose they were a lamb, a Christmas stocking and a dog. I think these three things are items that are meaningful to me and represent me. (I will explain why in detail in my presentation PowerPoint.)
- For this project, I think using new technology correctly and finding a niche that works for you was successful. Because for technology, we used new technology and did learning this week which was challenging. If this is overcome it will be a successful learning. Finding your niche on the other hand is an assignment that has been going on since last week. Completing it this week would be a good step forward.
- I think using c4d to refine the model was a challenging task. Because I always make mistakes in c4d. Besides that scanning an item in its entirety is also challenging. But this was not particularly difficult and only required us to scan very carefully.
- For this week's lecture I learned about portraiture and diversity and building self-representation using data based on technical and conceptual skills in 3D design. I was able to gain insight into the content of the lecture through experimentation and completing tasks myself.
Project 3
Final Design
For this project I chose to use 3d printing of three items that could represent me. They are a lamb and a puppy and a Christmas stocking. I chose them not because they could represent me, but because they are meaningful and special to me. For the lamb, I am a sheep in the zodiac sign. Through this zodiac sign people can know my age and year of birth. For the Christmas stocking, I am a person who was born on Christmas Day, so Christmas is very important to me. (Small explanation: we don't celebrate Christmas in China, but because my brother and I have our birthdays on Christmas Day, this holiday is very important to us.) For the puppies, our family has had dogs for as long as I can remember, and they have been a part of my family and an integral part of me for as long as I can remember. So I thought it was a good idea to choose to use it here instead of me. “Meanings are given by people.” So I think they are important enough for me to prove me as well.
- I think throughout the design and selection process I struggled with exactly what image to use to represent myself. And this query of mine was resolved after I completed the first and second activities. After drawing my own data and paper portrait in the first activity, I think I understood myself better. In choosing these very common items and options, they described me. In the second activity, I understood that what I really wanted after learning about the new scanning technology were items that were important and meaningful to me. So I ended up choosing the 3d printed item over the others. Because I thought this choice would explain and present myself in a more comprehensive way rather than just through appearances.
- For my models, I think after actually printing them out is completely different than just looking at the modeling. To be honest I don't think my printed lambs lived up to my expectations. Because I added a lot of details while modeling. (Like my three ear piercings, but the print doesn't reflect that :( ) But overall I think I'm more than happy with the choice of items and the modeling. I see this project as a delivery of information and technology and reality. There are many different forms of reality that can be expressed through current technology. It is a very interesting point. Just like this project, people can choose to print their real selves or objects that represent them. These are all ways in which information can be conveyed. What they all ultimately express is the use of data to construct a self-representation based on the technical and conceptual skills of 3-D design.
